Socialized Healthcare and the United States
Abstract
In this paper I will discuss the benefits of having a socialized healthcare system in the United States of America. More comprehensive disease prevention will result in fewer hospitalizations and also create a decrease in surgical procedures. A socialized healthcare system will eliminate administrative workload for many nurses and doctors and also decrease costs for every American.
Socialized Healthcare and the United States
According to Cavanaugh (1999), “Of all the major industrialized nations, the United States of America is the only one whose citizens do not enjoy the benefits and security of a universal comprehensive health care system” (p. 1). I believe the United States of America would benefit from having socialized healthcare. It would improve disease prevention; eliminate administrative workload, and decrease the cost of healthcare for everyone.
Disease prevention is a major issue in hospitals and clinics today. “Prevention means stopping the disease from appearing at all. Yes, there are some measures like wearing seatbelts to prevent fatal car accidents and the extreme measures of removing body parts so that cancer does not occur in that part. What I am talking about is advising patients about a life-style change which will truly prevent a disease. We don't have that.” (Masiello, 2009) We cannotprevent many diseases like Masiello suggests because people do not have access to healthcare due to ever rising costs or lack of health insurance. Messerli (2009) believes “Free medical services would encourage patients to practice preventive medicine and inquire about problems early when treatment will be light; currently, patients often avoid physicals and other preventive measures because of the costs” (p. 1).
