Native Americans

Before the settlers from England, France, and Spain ever stepped foot on “American” soil, the Native Americans had lived there long before 1492. The Native Americans are the ones who began the history of America. The Natives were settled in the West and had civilizations; they then were invaded by European soldiers and immigrants. The author’s theme of this chapter is to let the readers know that there were many people living in America long before Columbus ever stepped foot on this land.
    The Mayans lived in Tulum, which is located east of the Yucatan Peninsula. Tulum was a more modest city that many of other cities built by the Mayans. The Mayans were a civilized and intelligent group of people. The people of Tulum hunted deer and turkey; and raised maize, beans, squash and took fish, lobster and clams from the waters of the Caribbean. With these crops and food, they traded in canoes, and they exchanged native honey and shells for cacao, which are beans to make cocoa, and other exotic goods. They also created the most accurate calendar of the world by studying the position of the stars and the sun. We base our calendar off the one which the Mayans created. The Mayans were not the only ones who lived on American soil.
    The Aztecs are another example of the many others who lived in America. They lived in the valley of Mexico. They called it Tenochtitlan. Both the Mayans and Aztecs grew many different crops and traded with other close by villages of people. The surrounding waters of the Aztec’s home discouraged attackers and helped their armies to make war. By 1492, the Aztecs demanded and received tribute from the neighboring states along the east and west. The Aztecs, like the Mayans were also very intelligent people. They had many jobs that people could have because they were really into having their own businesses. They also punished against theft, drunkenness, and adultery.
