The Anglo-Saxon epic hero, Beowulf, and modern day firefighters have many differences and similarities. How brave must one be to run into a smoke and flame-filled house with such celerity and no hesitation to rescue a person from death? As brave as man must be to fight off a monster that is twice his size? Is one hero really braver than the other is, or do they just possess different kinds of bravery? The epic hero, Beowulf, and modern day firefighters have many differences and similarities.
Beowulf was an epic warrior of the Anglo-Saxon time period. According to the people of his time in history, he was the strongest, bravest, and most loyal man to ever walk the earth. Beowulf could kill any monster, slay any dragon, and defeat whoever challenged him. Beowulf knew the power and strength that he had, and like all heroes, was not afraid to let it show. Beowulf would overtly boast without a trace of humility, and his pride was accepted as perfectly normal. His motivations were simply encomiums from the townspeople and his goal to defeat anything that got in his way.
The firefighters of the New York City Fire Department are said to be some of the bravest heroes. A man or woman who is willing to enter a burning building or area with a seconds notice to rescue a person, or something as simple as a family pet, is extremely heroic and brave. Not many people would be first in line to do what they volunteer to do. The pride of joy they get when they save a life motivates them to do everything they can possibly do.
In comparison to one another, Beowulf and firefighters are both very heroic and brave. They both fight battles for those they care about. Although Beowulf is a fictional epic hero unlike firefighters, he can still relate in a way to all the heroic deeds that firefighters accomplish.
