Dragracing in todays culture

Atlanta Drag Racing

For my cultural event my boyfriend and I took a day and went to the drag races at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This was a very interesting event to attended not only because it was fun. It helped me to understand the culture of motor sports were they originated and were they are going in the future. We got to talk to some of the members to the National Hot Rod Association Hall of Fame who were there to tell us about what the sport was like in the 1950’s till today. Learning about something that is new to me or anyone else is a great way to expand your knowledge.

This type of event fits into our society especially south because it has become a past time of many people. Growing up in the south I remember cars always being a big part of my dad’s life and still to this day he is still working on the automobiles that sit in our drive way. A man named Henry Ford who produced the Model – T Ford, invented cars here in the USA. So Muscle cars and the speed fit into the American mold nicely.

According to the Atlanta Motor Speedway there was almost 40,000 people in the stands that day and it seemed like everyone was enjoying there day. I also enjoyed the day even though I only went because it was a free ticket. I had a wonderful time learning the difference between a spark plug and an oxygen sensor, and what the jobs of these parts were. Everyone in attendance including myself not only enjoyed the races but they enjoyed being able to be hands on. At the speed way you could walk up and look at the cars, touch them, and for one lucky little boy get to set in them. According to the reaction of the crowd it seemed that there favorite race all day was the one when legendary funny car racer John Force would race his daughter Ashley Force for the title of winner of the Summit Southern Nationals.
