Video Game Industry: Sony Computer Entertainment

Video game industry is a growing arena. It opens up dozens of job disciplines and employs thousands of people worldwide (Wikipedia). From 1998 to 2001, the industry became the fastest growing segment of the entertainment industry with a growth rate of 15 to 25 per cent. Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese video game company specializing in a variety of areas in the video game industry, mostly in video game consoles and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation that was established on November 16, 1993 in Tokyo, Japan. They conducts the Research & Development, production, and sales of hardware and software for their high-selling PlayStation line of handheld and video game consoles. They are also a developer and publisher of video games for their systems, and is comprised of several subsidiaries covering the company's biggest markets: America, Europe, Oceania and Asia (Wikipedia).

SHORT HISTORY

The history of home video games is a history of constant change and innovation, battles over standards, and revolution of the technology. The industry has steps forward through a development stage characterized by small inventors, and an expansion and legitimization phase based on popular acceptance and the guarantee of profitability. It all started in 1988 when Sony and Nintendo were working together to develop the Super Disc. The Super Disc was going to be a CD-ROM attachment that was intended to be part of Nintendo's soon to be released Super Nintendo game. However, Sony and Nintendo parted ways business-wise and the Super Disc was never introduced or used by Nintendo. In 1991, Sony used a modified version of the Super Disk as part of their new game console - the Sony Playstation.
