Bilingualism In Education And Politics

Bilingualism in Education and Politics
The article titled, “The pros of bilingualism education”, suggest that bilingualism is a very basic idea in education. If children live too far away from school, send a bus to pick them up. If they come to school hungry, give them breakfast and they can learn. Therefore, if a student comes to school not knowing the English language, then teach in the language he or she knows (Maceri, 1999). The concept   is that good teachers know that they need a variety of tools to meet the diverse needs of their students. Bilingual education is one of those tools.
The article titled, “Texas should promote bilingualism education in public school system”, discusses the importance of bilingual citizens. The article states, “The only way for Americans to move forward is through education.” (Ivey, 2005). Texas is one of the many states that does not allow bilingual education in their education system.
The article titled, “Bilingualism in Politics” displays the concerns of bilingualism   not being implored in politics in the United States. The article suggest that shortages of translators is hampering the diplomatic, military and intelligence operations that is going on in the Middle East (Pennington, 2008).
The article titled, “Newt Gingrich Decries “Ghetto” Nature of bilingual Education” shows the cons for bilingualism. Newt stated, “ Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English” (FoxNews, 2007). Gingrich also said that bilingualism   poses long- term dangers to the fabric of our Nation and allowing it to continue to grow is very dangerous (FoxNews, 2007). Gingrich   supports making English the Nation's official language and believes other languages should be secondary in schools (FoxNews, 2007).
