Power and politics are evident in a great deal of organizations in the world today. Organizations have groups within that collaborate and compete with one another to complete tasks and gather resources. In some cases the power and politics of a company can be abused and unfortunately, the employees and managers are the people who suffer. Cases like the mortgage companies writing business to unqualified people to make huge profits and Cemex Inc purchasing competitors. The companies used executive power and influence to advance themselves in today’s environment. Now these types of companies are suffering and are experiencing issues with management and leadership practices.
Having power in an organization is having the ability to influence people to perform tasks for the individual asking for the task. Power is achieve in a multitude of ways including issuing punishment, rewards or from a formal authority. Power can be used in positive ways or abused in certain cases. The audience plays a crucial part of power, if the people under the manager or authority is not influenced the power is not received. Having the power to influence people is an important \role for a manager in an organization. Without power the manager has no control of his or her people, in turn limits success.
Politics and power are two alike when organizations are included in the scenario. Politics in an organization “involves the use of power to find ways of balancing individual and collective interests in otherwise difficult circumstances.”(Hunt & Osborn & Shermerhon, 2009) Politics is a process of collaborating similar interest within an organization between managers to appease each owns interest. Power and politics work together to bring a company together in trying times and helps complete the task at hand.
