the media system of an Asian country that is not covered in the readings or the seminars.

Abstract

Asia region needs competitive elections, stronger and more representative political parties, and a vibrant civil society. Substantial efforts to practice an independent journalism or free media have stumbled badly in South Asian region, especially in Maldives. This piece of writing offers insights on the key issues to be met in order for free truthful democracy to flourish in Maldives. Maldivian constitution article 25 states that ‘all citizens have the right to express their opinions orally, in writing or by any other means’. Many think political parties bring more damage and loss to our fraternal community than benefits. However, political parties are part of our life and system and they will stay with us.

This piece of writing offers insights on the key issues to be met in order for free truthful democracy to flourish in Maldives.

Freedom House, a nongovernmental organization that supports democracy and freedom of the media, said in its annual press freedom survey that "negative trends" outweighed "positive movements in every region, particularly in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and North Africa." According to the survey it has been seven straight years deterioration, with minor improvements in a small number of countries, in parts of South Asia and Africa.
