The United States has been split right down the middle when it comes to the question of gay marriage. There have been numerous arguments for and against gay marriage. Some people would argue that it is a poor example for the youth of America. Others would argue that gay people do not have the same morals and values for marriage that heterosexual people have for marriage. Most opposition towards gay marriage is based on stereotypes of gay people and not on facts.
The first point that opponents of gay marriage make is the definition of marriage in the Holy Bible and in the dictionary. Marriage is defined in the Holy Bible and Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary as a legal union between two persons of the opposite sex, man and woman. According to people who oppose gay marriage this is one of the main reasons why gay marriage should not be legalized in the United States. Religious people are the head of the definition” argument. They feel that because God does not approve of two men together the country should not even consider gay marriage.
Those who go against gay marriage for religious reasons tend to forget that this is not a country based on religion. People who are homosexual and want to get married do not ask for a ceremonial wedding in a big chapel. In the few places that have legalized gay marriage the nuptials are exchanged in what is known as a civil marriage. A civil marriage is defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary as a marriage performed by a government official....
