Musical Timeline
Music is all around us. You hear music walking in a store, driving in your car or on television. Out of all the types of music there are many people that sing them. Music is very popular and we never wondered how it all began. Musical history can be defined in different ways. The ways are the Middle Ages, Renaissance, The Baroque Period, Classical Era, Romantic and Modern era.
In the exploration of the Medieval music, also known as the middle ages. We encounter the most distant and longest era of real music history. Saint Gregory was a pope from the year 500 to 604 and his name came from a popular term called the Gregorian chant or the plain chant. The Gregorian chant is a monophonic music composed with only one melodic line, more melodic lines are heard at the same time in harmony. Some important composers at this time would be Hildgard von Bingen and Guillame de Machau. The growing emphasis during the Renaissance began a change of status for composers of the music in society. During the Renaissance the composers were recognized more often during their lifetimes. Not only was spiritual music but secular music was becoming more common. Many instruments of this period were improved. Lots of madrigals and motets and songs were forms included. During this period the music was more expressive. Some popular composers are Andrea Gabrielli and Orlando Gibbons. The Baroque age is a new musical form developed opera. This form combined poetry, theater, the visual arts, and music. It arose as a result of the efforts group of Italian intellectuals in Florence who wanted to recreate the drama of the ancient Greeks. During the Boroque period homophony became more important. This was a clear difference between the melodic line and the secondary accompanying parts. This style was very important in opera and in solo vocal music.
