I. Caraka
A. Based on 8 branches of medicine
Internal, Surgery, Demonic diseases, Toxicology, Pediatrics, Diseases of the Head, Aphrodisiacs, Rejuvenation
B. Focused on maintenance of well being and happiness
C. Included anatomy and physiology, human development, and theories of evolution
II. Sushruta Samhita
A. Written by Sushruta, later proclaimed “father of Indian surgery”
His collection includes more than 75 surgical procedures, 120 surgical instruments, and 700 vegetable-based medications
B. Sushruta best known for contributions to plastic surgery
Harsh amputation punishments
C. Amazing surgical technologies
Rhinoplasty, Opthalmology, Bladder stones, Intestinal/Abdominal wounds, Classification of bones and treatments, Explanations of frostbite/heatstroke/burns
III. Sushruta’s advancements for India
A. Promoted self-hygiene
Urged public to bathe, brush teeth, exercise, eat properly
B. Understood sanitation
Fumigated OR with herbs to disinfect, discouraged people from eating fly-infested foods
C. “Vaccinated” public for smallpox
Placed dried small pox scabs into others to produce immunity
D. 226 BC - findings of hospitals
Advocated for wine as anesthesia
The two medical texts from this period gave India a great advantage in health care. Sushruta’s knowledge in this time was amazing given how much is known today.
