Ancient Greek Fashion And How It’S Effecting Modern Times
The people of ancient Greece did not just wear cloth robes and leather slippers. Every male or female of each class system had a proper way of dressing. The people of ancient Greece did this so you could tell which class system they belonged to by just looking at them. The unique thing the ancient Greeks did that no one else was doing was that they were using the same cloth for both genders call the chiton.
The men of ancient Greek had many ways to wear their chiton. The wealthier men wore their chiton hanging off one shoulder cutting very low. They had their chest out to symbolize great wealth and great power. The men with wealth also had design sewed into their chiton. With different fabrics that served as the belt. They also wore beautiful jewels to accent their chiton. The men who were less fortunate wore plain chitons that covered both shoulders. This was a statement that meant they were weak. It also let everyone know they didn’t own much. The warriors on the other hand wore chitons that had a hard inner layer and metal breast plates. This let everyone know that they were heroes.
The women of ancient Greece were the same as the men in many ways. Ancient Greece glorified the human body. The wives of the wealth men also wore their chiton hanging off one shoulder. Unlike the men theirs did not cut as low though. The wealthy women also dressed up their chiton with rare jewelry. They also had a choice of the length of their chitons. Their chiton also included beautiful patterns, prints and designs. The wives of the less fortunate wore long chitons that resemble the little black dress in modern times. The women of ancient Greece also had different head dresses to express their social status. The bigger and bolder the head dress the higher up they were on the social status ladder. The lower classes usually wore their hair pinned up.
