Cruise

Ships operate on the high seas and hence every care must be taken to ensure safety of passengers. Security is a concern prior to boarding and whiles onboard a cruise vessel
Perceived Security Risks
  * Piracy – the ship may be boarded by pirates and passengers may be taken hostage or robbed.
  * Terrorism – the ship may be hijacked and passengers may be killed. This has only happened once on the Achille Lauro in October 1985
  * Attack on the ship and subsequent sinking of the vessel – has not happened
Measure to Reduce Risk
  * Danger comes from humans – hence it may be necessary to check the identity and maybe background of those on board
  * Passenger check
  * Crew check
  * Staff check
  * Danger comes from goods brought aboard
  * To reduce risk, shipping companies check luggage with X-Ray
  * They monitor suppliers who deliver goods to the ship
  * Monitor staff that delivers goods to the ship

Safety risk:
  * People can fall in water and
  * (a) drown
  * (b) die from hypothermia (getting too cold)
  * (c) die or get injured from the fall into the sea
  *
To reduce the risks of an accidental “Man Overboard” situation we have to:
  * a. Install close circuit TV cameras on board that monitor all parts of the outside decks

We have to educate clients on what to do in an emergency- after they hear seven short blasts followed by one long blast they must move quickly to their allocated muster station.
The ship will have to carry the appropriate number of life vests and of course life boats (unlike the Titanic which did not carry enough and see what happened)
