American History

America suffered greatly after the first world war. This country went into a great depression. When pearl harbor happened in 1941, America was thrust into the second world war. When the second world war was over, American life's were changed by the effects of the war. Americans were now faced with something completely new. Americans were now the world power. American woman's roles were changing. During the war Women worked, but now that the men were home, the women went back to the kitchen. These components of change can be shown by our presidents, the woman’s place in society and the rise of the Hollywood era.
Harry Truman took over the presidency on April 12,1945. During this time America was engulfed in WWII. Less than a month after Truman took office, Germany was cornered by the Allies and forced to surrender. With an American victory in Europe, Truman attended the Potsdam conference to determine the fate of Europe. Truman met with the other world powers. At the conference, Truman was told that the atomic bomb had been successfully tested. After learning this, Truman proceeded to order the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. Truman told the Americans, “We are now prepared to obliterate more rapidly and completely every productive enterprise the Japanese have above ground in any city. We shall destroy their docks, their factories, and their communications. Let there be no mistake; we shall completely destroy Japan’s power to make war”. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Japan formally surrendered on September 2, 1945. WWII was over (National Archives and Records Administration).  
After WWII ended, so did Americans desire to fight. The government wanted to stop the spread of Communism. Truman was the front runner for the anti communist movement. Truman addressed the nation by claiming, “A leftist victory in Greece would lead to communist takeovers in other parts of Europe...The struggle in Greece as a conflict between two ways of life.
