Does poetry matter?

It’s not always easy to interpret or thrilling to read, but poetry plays an enormous part in the world of literature. Poetry provides deeper emotions than typical writing. It can create such images in your mind, unexplainable to speak and most of all, poems tell a story; different to each one whom reads it. The poem “Poem 1078” by Emily Dickinson and the poem “autumn” by Jacques Prévert show these aspects of poetry in detailed ways.
To begin with, the emotions in a poem create the tone and attitude of a poem. These influence the way the reader feels and the way the author feels. The poem “poem 1078” shows a deep feeling of sadness and pain. “The sweeping up the heart and putting love away we shall not want to use again until eternity.” There is a feeling of how upset she is for losing a loved one. It may be interpreted another way, or another feeling, but that’s the point. Poetry, essentially, has no boundaries. The feelings and interpretations of a poem are personal and made by the reader themselves.
In addition, poetry creates various images within the readers mind. An internal image has much more value and meaning than a visual image that is drawn or written. The poem “autumn” creates an elaborate image: “A horse collapses in the middle of an alley, leaves fall on him our love trembles and the sun too.” (pg 39) What image is drawn in your mind? Answers are endless. These images make poetry worth reading. Images drawn and received from poems create the amazing experience of reading poetry.
Lastly, poetry produces a diverse set of stories and interpretations. The story behind a poem is for the reader to figure out. Generally, there is no right or wrong answer to what is thought to be the story of the poem, as long as it can be proved.
