At 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the American way of life as we knew was changed forever. It was a tragic day that was permanently etched into many of our minds. In twelve seconds, two triumphant towers in New York City that were once iconic symbols of the most powerful country on earth were reduced to piles of ash, fire, and molten steel. That fire is still burning inside many of us. We cannot forget to mention the nearly three thousand innocent men, women, and children who lost their lives at the hands of Islamic terrorists piloting American planes. Not only were the citizens and structures of America attacked, our freedom, liberty, and form of government was attacked. No matter whom we voted for in 2001, George Bush is now our president. Not only is he our president, he is also the commander in chief for our armed forces. Tough and unpopular decisions that are beyond our comprehension, had to be made, and made quickly. For now Americans are, or should be, united. Many of us will have to make sacrifices, some of which we may not like or agree with. We must cooperate and stand behind our government and the decisions that are made for this was a deliberate attack on all Americans, but more notably American Sovereignty.
The authors of an article entitled “In Defense of Freedom” evidently understand that this was not just an attack on a few thousand people but realizes that this was an attack on all American citizens and our form of government. They show sympathy for the innocent people who lost their lives and demands justice by stating “we mourn the loss of these innocent lives and insist that those who perpetrated these acts be held accountable” (Lester and Faigley 519). They do fail to mention the nature of these heinous attacks. These attacks were unprovoked and formulated on our own soil right under our nose. Unfortunately, the authors lack a sense of urgency to stand up as a country and fight this fight now. They agree that something needs to be done but...
