Halem Globtrotters
In the 1920’s & 30’ssegragation was strong in the United States.
Black men were not allowed to play Basketball with white men in professional leagues like the NBL (National Basketball league). All black basketball teams ended up playing against each other.
In the late nineteen twenties on Chicago a man former NFL football player named Dick Hudson was promoting and booking games for Black basketball teams.
Many all black teams would play each other in different cities throughout the country as part of entertainment in communities. Dick Hudson founded a team called the “Savoy Big Five.” The team was named after Chicago's famous Savoy Ballroom, where they played many of their early games. The first players on the team were Tommy Brookins, William Grant, Inman Jackson, Lester Johnson, Joe Lillard, Randolph Ramsey, Walter Wright, and William Watson.
Tommy Brookins, who was the captain of Savoy five, founded the first Globe trotters team. He quit the “Savoy big five” because he didn’t think he was getting paid enough money for playing on the team. Tommy Brookins was more of a player than promoter and found it hard to book the teams for games. He heard of a guy named Abe Saperstein who booked different sports games and wanted Abe to book games for his new team the Globe Trotters. Brookins and Abe got along so Brookins made Abe the head coach and manager of the Globe trotters. It was hard to book games because they were an all black team and whites did not want, or weren’t allowed to play black basketball teams.
The first game played as Globe trotters was played in Hinckley, Illinois on January 7, 1927. The Globetrotters name was changed to the New York Harlem Globetrotters in 1929 by the team’s new manager Abe Saperstein. Even though the team was from Chicago, Saperstein selected name because he thought it would bring more bookings and attention. It was a sign of his shred marketing.
