Abraham Maslow                                      

Abraham Harold Maslow was born as the first of seven children to his parents who were Jewish immigrants from Russia; he was born on April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, NY.   His parents being uneducated pushed him toward academic studies.   As a child he was very lonely and found solace in books.   He first studied law at the City College of New York for three semesters. Then transferring to Cornell, then back to CCNY all to satisfy his parents.   He married Bertha his first cousin, which was disapproved by his parents.   He and his wife went on to have two daughters.   Abe along with his wife moved to Wisconsin so that he could attend the University of Wisconsin where he started becoming interested in psychology.   While there he spent time working with Harry Harlow, who is famous for his experiments with attachment behavior, based off of baby rhesus monkeys. After he graduated he began teaching full time at the Brooklyn College, during this time he met many European scholars that were immigrating to the US. Abe spent his final years in California, until he died of a heart attack on June 8 1970.
Maslow’s theory was called the hierarchy of needs. There are five broad layers: the physiological needs, the need for safety and security, the need for love and belonging the need for esteem, and the need to actualize the self, in that order. The physiological needs include oxygen, water, minerals and vitamins, and the need to maintain a pH balance and a temperature of 98.6 or at least close to it. Also there’s the need to rest, sleep, get rid of wastes, avoid pain, and have sex. Next are the safety and security needs, once the physiological needs are met this second step begins. Most people become interested in having a home in a safe neighborhood, a little job security, some insurance.
