Have you ever thought about going to school in the north side of Chicago? My mom did, and I’m going to tell you all about it. First, she woke up at seven o’clock. Nobody would help her get ready. She had an alarm clock that woke her up. She could wear anything she wanted, and usually bought breakfast at school. She usually had cereal and milk.
Her school was five blocks away from her house. She would walk there every day with her neighbors. It took her about ten minutes to get there. My mom’s school was extremely large and made of gray brick. My mom said there were so many rooms that she couldn’t even count them. She said that the grades were from Pre-K 3 to 8th grade. When she got there they did morning assembly. First they said the Pledge of Allegiance, and then they had morning announcements.
School started at 9:00. They sat at desks in their classrooms. The arrangements of desks were in rows. The role of the teacher was to teach the whole class. The children were not scared or uncomfortable around their teacher, and they all cooperated with each other. Some of the school rules were respect others, keep your hands to yourself, don’t litter, raise your hand before you speak, and be quiet when the teacher is talking. They had the same rules as us kids now. The subjects were Math, Science, English, Spanish, Sign Language, and Social Studies. Some assignments were things like reading specific books or novels, and doing book reports. She told me they had a lot of homework.
Were you wondering if they had a lunch period? Well they did, and it was forty five minutes long. She brought food from home and also bought lunch at school. She usually bought sandwiches. My mom had two recesses. She had one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each one was about twenty minutes long. The played games like dodge ball, kickball, basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer. There was no playground so they didn’t have any slides or swings. All they did...
